First 90 days checklist
- Vehicle (30 days): the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles says you have 30 days from the time you move to register your vehicle in Texas; penalty fees may apply after that.
- Driver license (90 days): new residents must obtain a Texas driver license from the Texas Department of Public Safety within 90 days of moving.
- Housing: compare neighborhoods on the neighborhoods guide and the real estate guide. Verify real estate agents with the Texas Real Estate Commission license search.
- Property taxes (owners): property records and appraisal information are at the Travis Central Appraisal District.
- Utilities: your electricity and water providers depend on your address. Austin Energy is the City of Austin's electric utility; confirm your provider with your landlord or the provider before you move.
- Sales tax: Texas imposes a 6.25% state sales and use tax; local taxes may add to it.
