Downtown Austin is the city's walkable core for live music, nightlife and the Texas Capitol. Sixth Street, a National Register historic district, is its best-known bar strip, and Visit Austin notes that it is closed to through traffic on Thursday through Saturday nights. What to see and do
Visit Austin describes downtown as several entertainment districts rather than one neighborhood, including the Red River Cultural District (the center of the live-music scene), Sixth Street and Rainey Street.
- Texas State Capitol: free guided tours run periodically Monday–Saturday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. and on Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.; self-guided touring is open Monday–Friday 7:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. and Saturday–Sunday 9:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. (hours as published by the Texas State Preservation Board).

- Lady Bird Lake: the Hike-and-Bike Trail is a 10-mile loop and its Boardwalk section runs 1.3 miles along the downtown shoreline.
Practical notes
Allow extra time on Thursday–Saturday evenings when Sixth Street is closed to cars; set your rideshare pickup a block or two away.
